The Young Men’s Muslim Association (YMMA) Maligawatte is a long-standing, non-political community service organization committed to social upliftment, educational advancement, and spiritual development. Established in 1948, the association proudly celebrates over 77 years of continuous service to the community in Sri Lanka.

Affiliated with the National Council of YMMAs of Sri Lanka and formally incorporated by Parliamentary Act, YMMA Maligawatte operates under the guiding principle: “Help us to Help Others.” This vision reflects the organization’s enduring commitment to compassion, unity, discipline, and meaningful community development. Our Legacy of Service For more than seven decades, YMMA Maligawatte has served as a trusted pillar of support for underprivileged families, students, youth, women, and elders within Maligawatte and surrounding communities. Through volunteerism, partnerships, and community generosity, the association has consistently delivered programs that nurture education, livelihood skills, health, spirituality, and social wellbeing. Community Services & Programmes

1. Educational Development

Education remains a core priority of YMMA Maligawatte. Key initiatives include: Distribution of school uniforms, exercise books, stationery, and footwear for needy students Scholarships and higher-education assistance for deserving undergraduates Reading rooms, library facilities, and self-study support Vocational training programmes for school leavers and dropouts Computer literacy and Spoken English classes to enhance employability Free seminars for G.C.E. (O/L) students and youth leadership training YMMA Pre-School providing early childhood education and character development

2. Youth & Women Empowerment

YMMA Maligawatte actively promotes dignity, self-reliance, and leadership through:
Skills training for young women, including sewing, dressmaking, and handicrafts
Youth leadership and personality development programmes
Counselling and guidance programmes for young men and women
Karate, Wushu, and extracurricular development activities
Training in graphic design, hardware, and software skills
Support for self-help business initiatives for needy families.

3. Welfare, Healthcare & Social Support

Guided by compassion and community responsibility, YMMA Maligawatte provides: Free weekly Ayurvedic medical clinics and distribution of spectacles Support for widows, orphans, and economically disadvantaged families Ulhiya (Qurbani) projects and Ramadan welfare programmes, including iftar arrangements for Muslim women Assistance for austere weddings of poor couples Construction and repair of mosques, madrasas, wells, and tube wells in rural areas Small-industry support and rural community upliftment projects Janaza transport assistance and other essential community services

4. Religious, Moral & Cultural Development

YMMA Maligawatte nurtures strong Islamic values and ethical living through: Thajweed and Fiqh classes for females (no age limit) Islamic children’s literature in Tamil, Sinhala, and English Inter-Ahadiyya competitions and religious education programmes Elders’ education and spiritual enrichment classes Looking to the Future Building on its proud heritage, YMMA Maligawatte continues to expand its vision through: Advanced vocational training centres (carpentry, electrical, electronics, refrigeration, motor mechanisms, and more) Teacher training, cookery, arts, and craft programmes Mobile phone repair and modern technical skill development Special education support for out-of-school children Youth counselling and family guidance initiatives These future-focused efforts aim to create a self-sustaining, educated, morally grounded, and socially responsible community.
